Fulminant viral hepatitis is a rapid and severe impairment of liver functions (acute liver failure) with hepatic encephalopathy developing less than 8 weeks after the onset of jaundice, secondary to viral hepatitis mainly due to HBV, but also to HAV. (EFO)
